What is a small business? It’s the living testament of our communities. The people behind these businesses are our friends and neighbors who work hard each day to ensure a greater quality of life for the people of our towns. That’s not all. There’s a lot of behind the scenes activities that go on amongst these business owners. Behind each and every owner there lies a heart. Compassion if you will, to give back to others.

In the time that I have been writhing this blog, I have come across many business owners, many of which have become great friends of mine. They are people, just like you and I, but together they continue to make a difference in the lives of many.

Julia Sloan and Lucille Kelsey, two local business owners on Main Street in Torrington are prime examples of just this attitude. They are working together, along with their friends, to donate non-perishable food to the Friendly Hands Food bank now through December 15th. It’s their fifth year of the food drive and each year brings more success. For Julia and her business Brazen Betties, this will be her third year in the drive as she joins in on the ranks of Lucille’s LA Consignment, and Lucille’s friends at Tummy to Teenz Consignment, and Lilly & Vine Florist Shop.

There’s something to be said when everyone comes together. Miracles happen. Just imagine what could happen if each person in town brought at least one can of food to the donation bins inside their stores. Imagine a family who once otherwise wouldn’t have been able to enjoy a dinner but now can thanks to the mere donation of one can of food by each individual. The power of one. If you don’t think you can make a difference, think again.

During the holidays, it’s important to give back. Now, more than ever, we could all use a bit of Christmas cheer in our lives. Won’t you help a family in need this holiday?

Together we can make a difference in the lives of many. Let’s help these lovely woman make an impact, and let’s help support the local businesses in our community that continue to be the greater good of us all.
