Day tripping!

So many of us yearn to get away from it all. Even if it’s for just a couple hours. Luckily, out here in Litchfield county, we have so much right in our own backyards! Escape the everyday with an escape to another world…

White Memorial….

The White Memorial Conservation Center on 80 Whitehall Road in Litchfield is a magnificent place to spend the day with the entire family. Get up close and personal with nature! You’ll be sure to see everything from white tailed deer to river otters even to the broad winged hawk.  You’ll be sure find much more than just that on this 4,000 acre nature preserve! Want to spend the night?  Go right ahead! Pack a tent! White Memorial has 47 sites nestled by Bantam lake and another 18 on Windmill hill, a quite location  under the protection of the pines.

Love to boat? They’ve got the opportunity for you too! Bantam lake and Bantam river are accessible from a public boat launch and offer you great canoeing and fishing experiences! Love to hike? Well what are you waiting for! White Memorial of course has this for you too! With over 35 trails, your sure to find just what your looking for. Open year round….which means even you cross country skiers will enjoy this too during the winter! Who says you have to sing the winter blues?

Now parents, listen up! White memorial has got something special for those little ones of yours. Children’s programs are available! That’s right. Spend an afternoon of learning…they’ll probably have so much fun, they’ll forget that their learning! White Memorial knows how to keep the kids entertained, maybe you’ll discover a little something new yourself! After all, life is all about learning.

I enjoyed this little day trip of mine. Biking through the pine canopy forest was no doubt an excellent idea. Though I didn’t see too much wildlife other than an otter and a crane, a few squirrels and a rabbit..there was no doubt in my mind this land had much more to offer. It always feels amazing when you have the opportunity to just get away from it all….and so close to home.
