Stay Warm!

This weekend will be the coldest weekend we have seen in years here in New England as temperatures drop significantly below zero in many areas, especially here in Litchfield county where we could see temperatures drop to an astounding -15 degrees, and that is without the windchill. Forecasters say this will be arctic like weather, and you better bundle up as you head out the door. If you are outside in this weather, and any part of your body is uncovered for 10-30 minutes, you can develop frostbite quickly.

So, what are some ways to stay warm? There are an array of ways to stay warm both inside and out. Below are some tips to help keep you protected from the elements as an arctic blast sets into our region.

  • Dress in Layers: Wear several layers of clothing and peel them off if you get too warm. The heat captured in between the layers keeps you toasty. (Hint: mittens are warmer than gloves, because fingers retain more heat when they touch each other.)
  • Stay Dry: Nothing chills you like a wet skin. Your base layer should be made of a material that wicks sweat away from your body. Popular fabrics include polypropylene and silk. Your outermost layer should be water and wind-proof.
  • Keep Head, Neck, Hands and Feet Toasty: Your extremities let off the most heat — so keep them wrapped with warm scarves, hats, mittens or gloves, and thick socks! 
  • Bring a Backpack: As you and the kids get hot on a hike or while playing outside, make sure you have a backpack to store their clothes they’ll want to peel off. Or, you can clip or tie damp clothing outside your pack to help them dry). When you get to your destination, have everybody put a layer back on to stay warm when they are not moving.
  • Feet First: Especially for snowy or icy conditions, get good boots that the kids can take on and off easily.
  • If you are not planning to head outdoors during this weather, and lets face it, who among us would want to be out in these bone chilling temps, there are many great ways to keep warm indoors, all while helping to keep costs low:

    Dress in Layers: The same tip that applies to the great outdoors, also applies to the great indoors. Wear a cashmere sweater or a shawl. There is no need to crank that heat up to 80 degrees. You’ll thank me when the bill arrives.

    Drink Warm Liquids: Have a cup of hot chocolate! Warm liquids are proven to increase your body temperature.

    Let the Sun in: Open the drapes of your south facing windows. In the winter, sun rises south of due east and sets south of due west.

    Throw a Log onto the Fireplace: Many of us here in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills and the Berkshires are fortunate enough to have fireplaces in our homes. Throw a few logs on as you enjoy a night in!
