It is said that in order to find peace in life, you must find yourself first. The ability to find yourself in todays world is both challenging and daunting. Challenging, because we can’t find the time to even find ourselves as we have become so consumed with our jobs and technology and daunting because, well, do you have time with your busy schedule to find some time for yourself?
Most of us cannot even come to terms to read this whole blog post let alone schedule some alone time. The way of our world has shifted as attention spans grow shorter.
So, what do we do about this?
A friend of mine recently posted about how she was opening her own yoga business. With my busy schedule, I absolutely saw the need to take some time out for myself and give it a shot. The grand opening celebration alone sounded right up my alley; moonlight paddle boarding yoga on a lake at sunset. If that does not scream “Get me out there with you!!” then I don’t know what does.
I took part in the grand launch event which was held at the Interlaken Inn’s private boat launch in Lakeville, CT. If you’re not familiar with this part of Connecticut, it is perhaps one of the most serene areas on the east coast. As a native of Litchfield County, I know the natural beauty of the area quite well and always recommend it to anyone needing an escape from reality.
Speaking of escapes, that is exactly what I did on Friday night as I experienced my first paddle boarding session. I’ve kayaked on lakes for years, but never got around to standing up on a paddle board and wandering around a lake for hours. The experience I had was second to none. I could have easily stayed on the lake until the sun came up, though lets be honest, I would have probably fell in at some point.
Around 8PM was the grand launch session. All nine of us anchored our paddle boards and began to relax as Theressa, our teacher and owner of Soulful SUP and Yoga, began to mellow us out with her calming voice as we all took our preferred poses. It was then that we began our yoga session on the lake as the sun set in the distance behind the hills.
That me time I was looking for? I found it.
Yoga is perhaps one of the most beneficial practices. Each pose I was in, I began to feel more in tune with my body and my surroundings. I was trusting that the board I was on was not going to to let me fall in as I began to change positions. As I got more comfortable with myself, and more at peace, I began to not even realize I was on a board at all, rather on my own private island on the lake.
By the end of the session, we were given the option to meditate on our boards for a bit as the sun disappeared behind the hills. It was perhaps one of the most calming times I’ve experienced in my life, and by the end of the session as I brought my paddle board in and headed towards the campfire that was set up, I knew instantly that I needed more of this in my life. We all need more of this in our lives. Too often, we get lost in the shuffle of life to take some time out for ourselves, and it’s a challenge that every one of us has that we need to tackle. If we do not, we will instantly lose out on finding the true person that we really are.
