There’s nothing I could enjoy more than a good old fashioned speakeasy.
Tucked away in a commercial building just east of Hartford, Connecticut is one of the coolest finds you may ever encounter, and it comes with a liquid treat.
Step past a bookcase door and into Onyx, a small distillery cooking up the first legal moonshine since prohibition in New England. Upon your arrival, you’ll soon discover just why this place is hiding behind a bookcase.
It’s probably the best kept secret in New England.
Through my discovery, I was able to taste some of the most delicious cocktails I have ever encountered. As a wine drinker, I was a little skeptical about trying moonshine. One taste, however, and I was hooked.
The Onyx Apple Pie was perhaps one of my personal favorites.
1 ½ oz Onyx Moonshine
1 ½ oz Apple Cider
½ oz Brown Sugar/Cinnamon Simple Syrup
1 oz Lemon Sour Mix
With a recipe like that, there’s no room to complain about taste. This tasted like a pure apple pie in a glass, and I couldn’t have been more content with it.
Onyx has plenty of other cocktails to choose from as well, the Apple Pie is just the beginning. Choose from a variety of flavors such as the Pink Lemonade, Gold Rush, Harvest Moon and more.
All of these cocktails are of course made with only the finest ingredients including the one and only Onyx moonshine. Apple Honey Infusion, anyone? How about the Onyx 111, the one that adds a serious kick to your drink and the one well needed for any Friday night cocktail after a long week.
There’s no question that Onyx delivers one of the most unique attractions in the state. When you want to get away from it all for a little bit, look no further than a spin of the bookcase at Onyx Distillery.
